​Math homework today pg. 17,18,19 Spelling Homework: Define all spelling words. Students may use their own words, labeled pictures, or definitions from the dictionary. Spelling lists should be found in the spelling section of the flex file.

Science Homework: Students should copy and define the four vocabulary words from page 6 to the vocabulary section of their Science notebook.

Day 3 

On May 17,2017 we learned two lessons. The first lesson we soaked pinto beans and dissected them to learn the different parts. Our next lesson came from the book, Project Learning Tree, where we learned about the different parts of a tree. We did an activity where the students acted as the layers of a tree with every group of students acting as a different layer. By doing these activities we now have a better understanding of the way plants work. We also finished our greenhouse and built the potato boxes.

Day 2 

May 16, 2017 we continued working on the greenhouse. We finished the floor and put a tarp over the roof. A majority of the eighth-grade class worked on the greenhouse, and we are very proud of the work we have accomplished with the help of our wonderful sponsors and teachers.

Day 1 

The Junior Master Gardener Program started on May 15, 2017. We learned how the plants surrounding us affect our daily lives by laying out our daily schedules. We went home and reported every product in our daily routine that uses plants. Our second lesson consisted of us learning the three types of soil and how water flows through them. We used bottles cut in half and filled them with big rocks which represented sand, marbles which represented clay, and fish rocks which represented silt. We then used a coffee filter and filtered water through the different objects showing. This showed us how slow or fast water flows through them.  We also began working on our greenhouse and laid down the base of the floor and the roof.

“The Junior Master Gardener Program is an international youth gardening program of the University Cooperative Extension Network. JMG engages in novel, “hands on” group and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening, develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the mind,” said the JMG program.  JMG is a nonprofit organization that gets children involved in exploring their world through meaningful activities that encourage life skills. The Elysian Fields Student Council had an exciting school year.  We attended the Dallas Maverick's Leadership in December, where we heard from some inspiring speakers on the topic of leadership and successful futures.  Afterward, we got to watch the opening season game.  All of our students went home with a new Mavs t-shirt, a ton of new options to consider for their future, and many fun memories. This spring, members Andrew Wise, Lexi Deramee, Lexie Aaron, Matthew Beasley, and Katherine Harris joined me in traveling to Shreveport for the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission Orientation.  We came back and shared the information we received with the school, and we started a drive, gathering needed desperately needed items for the shelter.  We collected over a car full of items and delivered them to the mission in late May. I am excited to see what the future holds for this awesome organization. Mrs. Ware
